What are the learning objectives?
VA6.CN.1, VA7.CN.1, VA8.CN.1: Develop personal artistic voice through connecting uses of art within a variety of cultural, historical,
and contemporary contexts.
Students will be able to:
-Recall what country the Festival of Elephants takes place
-Explain elements of the Festival of Elephants
-Analyze the difference between the Festival of Elephants from India and other festivals in America
-Create a work of art inspired by the Festival of Elephants
Who are the learners? What is their age range?
The learners are middle school art students, ages 11-14, in America and India.
How will the learners communicate with each other?
Students will communicate via the Internet: Google Docs, Email, Skype
What technology tools will the students use?
The students will use personal computers, either PC or MAC, to access the internet, Google Docs, their email, and Skype. The personal computers will be provided by the school through laptop checkout carts or computer labs. Students will have to have background knowledge on certain programs or be paired with other students that have a background using certain tools in order to be successful throughout the global learning project. Students will also be encouraged to do further research on their own about The Festival of Elephants using personal technologies not provided by the school.
What technology tools will the instructors use?
The instructors will be using a personal computer as well as classroom presentation hardware, such as an LCD projector and Smartboard, in order to instruct the class and have class-wide Skype session with the other students in India. The teacher will also have to use email, Google Docs, and PowerPoint. The instructor will be expected to be strong in all technological aspects of the project.
What is the timeline for the project?
The students will spend one week on this project:
Day 1 - Introduction to topic, PPT, Passport update and research on the festival of elephants - interviewing art students in
India about the festival/brainstorming ideas.
Day 2 - Student will begin by printing a marble effect on paper using gray and white paint.
Day 3 - Student will draw their elephant, cut it out and glue to a background of their choice.
Day 4 - Student will decorate their elephant using various materials (sequins, pastels, yarn, ribbon etc).
Day 5 - Student will share their artwork with fellow classmates and students in India and explain their project.
What is expected as the final outcome for student work?
The expected final outcome for student work is to create a work of art which has been influenced by the art seen in the Festival of Elephants. Students final art piece will be created using mixed media techniques, incorporating various art materials to create their final masterpiece. As another piece to the global perspective, students will be expected to share their artwork with classmates in America and students in India, and explain their artwork using constructive criticism and art vocabulary.

- Work created by the student must include mixed media techniques: paint, paper mache, colored pencil, etc.
- The artwork must show influences from The Festival of Elephants
- Students will be expected to keep a journal/log of conversation that they had with other students in India, and through this journal/log explain conversations that they had critiquing various artwork relevant to the project.
